HTC One M9 – Similar, Yet Different

Screenshot_2015-03-01-11-40-33The HTC One M9 was released officially not too long ago, and while being extremely similar to the One M8, it is better in a lot of ways. This third iteration of the flagship line follows in the footsteps of its predecessors in terms of design, all of which set the standard for build quality in Android devices.

The One M8 received a lot of praise for it’s specifications, design language, and was even called the best all round phone of 2014 by many. How does one build the “best all round phone of 2015”? By the looks of it, it’s as easy as ironing out the wrinkles from the “best all round phone of 2014”.

Design

The design of the all new HTC One M9, is so similar to it’s previous iteration, you might not be able to tell the difference from a distance, which can be both a good and bad thing. However, just because the design is the same, doesn’t mean it looks any less beautiful.

This slightly revamped design fixes most of the issues that existed on the One M8 like the lack of grip on the sides and the somewhat too large HTC bar at the front. The new design now also has an edge to grip on the sides, and a slightly smaller HTC bar at the front. In addition, the materials are a bit more grippy than it’s predecessor.

Camera

Screenshot_2015-03-01-11-11-48The one thing that failed to deliver on the One flagship line in the past was the mediocre camera. It’s 4 “Ultrapixel” sensor produced good photos, but zooming in was not possible. Instead of upping it to maybe 8 “Ultrapixels” this time, HTC decided to head to the extreme opposite with a full 20MP sensor. This gives plenty of room for zooming and cropping, but only after hands-on experience we will know if it’s worth it.

The lens is also now covered by sapphire crystal to prevent against scratches which might actually be necessary, considering the lens protrudes a bit.

Speakers

Just when you thought it couldn’t get any better, BoomSound proved us wrong! The new BoomSound speakers are much improved when compared to the predecessors’, and now comes with Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound.

Specifications

In terms of specifications, the One M9 is more of an an incremental upgrade from the One M8 with a slightly faster CPU (Snapdragon 810), a slightly larger battery and an extra 1GB of RAM.  Where the major upgrade showed itself was in the camera department.

Software

Screenshot_2015-03-01-11-17-54The One M9 will come with Sense 7 running over Android 5.0 Lollipop which brings a lot of changes and improvements like the all new smart launcher, photo editor, and smart gallery.

The new smart launcher will be able to display apps on your homescreen, based on your location, meaning productivity applications might be at the forefront while at the workplace while media consumtion applications might take their place when at home.

Sense 7 will also be able to generate themes based on your preference or images you take. This will actually theme the entire UI and all its elements such as the multitasking tray, status bar colours, system buttons, app icons and more.

All in all, the One M9 is definitely a beautiful device with great specifications. However, a lot more could have been done, which is why it seems more evolutionary rather than revolutionary. Instead of seeming like a revamped device, it feels like just another incremental upgrade.

If you already own the One M8, the main substantial change you’ll get with an upgrade is the camera. Other than that, you’re probably good for another year. As stated before, the One M8 was called the “best phone of 2014” by a lot of people, and with the improvements on the One M9, it’s definitely heading to be one of the best all round phones of 2015.
